Starkie Sowers, Director of Education for Clark's Nutrition Stores since the 1980's has a long-term relationship with top supplement makers in Japan.  He lived the tragic L-Tryptophan contamination event of 1989 more than most since Clark's Nutrition customers were effected. There was over 250 deaths and hundreds more left permanently disabled.  There was never a government link to GMOs which was just starting at the time even though the government knew that was a possibility.  Starkie was able to talk to those manufacturers from Japan before our show and provide a confirmation on the link between GMOs and the contaminated L-Tryptophan.  The best report on the incident history and everything associated with it can be found here and then scroll down for the interview:

Starkie Sowers has been in charge of supplements and staff training for many years as the Clark's Nutrition Stores Director of Education.  When it comes to helping the rest of us feel comfortable about the safety and usefulness of adding supplements to our daily routine there aren't many people that come with the experience that Starkie brings to the table.  

Even though the supplement industry had a long record of safety, especially when compared to the pharmaceutical industry, case in point recent deaths from steroid injection fungal contamination, there was one supplement event that we both felt had never gotten closure.

The incident was odd because it didn't make any sense that the supplement L-Tryptophan that had been used safely for years could kill anyone.  For Smart Health Talk Host Elaine McFadden and Starkie Sowers it was like it happened yesterday.  Elaine was shocked when she ran across a published paper (see below) that suggested the supplements were actually made from GMO (genetically modified organisms) and how that piece of information was never told to Congress during the subsequent investigation.  

Apparently all research and lab evidence was destroyed and the lab shut down after the incident. The fact that GMOs were involved in the deaths was kept from Congress and the general public, together with new research from studies such as the French GMO study published September 2012 that revealed an even higher risk for cancer from GMO corn seed and Round Up pesticide that we had imagined.

That incident was very personal for Starkie especially people that he had recommended use the product had gotten ill from the contaminated L-Tryptophan and he followed their cases and visited them in the hospital wanting to know everything about what was happening.  The incident had never set right with him because it didn't make sense due to the long history of safety with the product. People just didn't ever get sick from L-Trytophan.  That was until the Showa Denko lab started using a cheaper form of production that involved GMO bacteria and created a contaminate with devastating consequences.

Starkie wanted to investigate and verify for himself that Showa Denko L-Tryptophan supplement maker Showa had produced product in the 1990s that was indeed GMO.  Lucky for us Starkie has a long standing relationship with a prominent Japanese supplement maker.  

Starkie called that contact before he joined us as a guest on Smart Health Talk Radio Show as a guest and was able to verify from that source that the L-Tryptophan supplement that killed, disabled and sickened all of those people was indeed GMO.  

The report, "The Truth About Tryptophan" published in the May/June, 1993 issue of VRP's Nutritional News did conclude, "That although the bacteria used to produce L-Tryptophan was genetically modified, there is insufficient evidence to prove that these modifications were solely responsible for the contaminants linked to the Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome."

Starkie Sowers and Elaine McFadden, MPH, RD discuss choosing healthy beverages, especially for kids. With so many products on the market It can be easy to miss warning labels for children on products such as energy drinks.  New drinks are being introduced so quickly the best strategy can be to have some basic drinks that you can keep around the house, and teach yourself how to read a label and what you should look for such as warnings to not serve to children. Starkie is exposed to a store full of natural and organic drinks and is responsible for training staff so figured he would be the best person to provide some valuable information and how to make good beverage choices for our kids.  Starkies a father #1 and has applied his health and nutrition knowledge together with that experience

Children and energy drinks

Had to include this picture because it was the same look on the faces of two children under 3 y/o after their mothers gave them free drinks received at an energy drink sponsored event.  Did point out the warning label to them that specifically said to NOT give to children, but mothers still allowed the children to continue to consume the energy drink to my dismay. Wondered if the reason was because they didn't bring water with them, it was hot at the beach, and didn't want to buy water when a free drink was available instead.  It took about two minutes after the children first drank the beverage a change in behavior could be observed.  They began yelling and running around in circles like they were having an adrenaline rush, but have no proof of course.  Guess after all of those biochemistry classes, my brain was envisioning the bio chemical reactions brought on by the energy generating ingredients at those adult concentrations in their small bodies.  More educations needed.
