What is blocking Hawaii from being self sufficient is the fact their fields have been taken over by big corporate farming operations such as Dole Fruit.
Most important of all is that many of the Hawaiian Islands have become the hub for GMO seed and pesticide research. Large chunks of land are used for that and the toxin are going into the environment and poisoning people, animals, wildlife, water, soil, the ocean, and other food grown.
These "research farms can be right across the street from schools. Children and school staff are regularly exposed to these experimental toxins and get sick, nausea, headaches, nose bleeds and even go unconscious. Needs to stop.
The local farmers should be allowed to grow food for the locals and visitors.
